Breathing New Life into a Historic Building
Town House in Banbury was originally converted into social housing in 2016. In 2022, inspections revealed that reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) was present in the roof, raising serious safety concerns. Residents had to be relocated, and the building was left empty while a solution was found.
Cherwell District Council stepped in, acquiring the property for £4.125 million and securing a £1.9 million government grant to repair the structure. The goal was to make the building safe again and reopen it as affordable housing as quickly as possible.

The Challenge: A Complex Refurbishment in a Busy Town Centre
This wasn’t a straightforward refurbishment. The building’s location, structure, and safety risks created several challenges:
- Structural risks: The RAAC roof needed to be safely removed and replaced without compromising the rest of the building.
- Urban setting: Located on a busy road, scaffolding had to be designed to avoid obstructing pedestrians and traffic.
- Tight deadlines: The refurbishment needed to be completed as soon as possible to provide much-needed housing.

The Scaffolding Solution
A carefully planned scaffolding system was essential for keeping the project on track. The solution included:
- Temporary Roof: A protective structure was installed to keep the building secure and provide a safe workspace.
- Access Scaffolding: Designed to allow easy movement for workers and materials while ensuring stability.
- Safety Inspections: Regular checks ensured compliance with UK scaffolding safety standards and minimised risks.

Unique Aspects of the Project
Town House wasn’t just another renovation project – it had a direct impact on the local community.
- Housing Priority: The refurbishment ensures 36 flats will be available for people in need, including refugees and low-income residents.
- Collaborative Effort: Multiple teams, including scaffolding contractors, engineers, and council planners, worked together to make it happen.
- Efficient Execution: Despite its challenges, the project is progressing on schedule, demonstrating how the right scaffolding solutions can make complex refurbishments possible.

A Story of Success
Urban refurbishment projects like this rely on expert scaffolding services. Proper planning and execution prevent delays, ensure worker safety, and keep projects within budget.
For any project requiring safe, compliant, and well-managed scaffolding solutions, partnering with experienced professionals is key. Whether it’s a large-scale housing redevelopment or a smaller structural repair, the right scaffolding setup makes all the difference.
